Ideas with Alan Ball

Checking in @ Sydney Opera House - Ideas with Alan Ball (american beauty, six feet under, true blood).

What a fascinating man to listen to! Such a creative, forward thinker, who is clearly at the forefront of an aspect of dark humor and raw emotion, rarely explored in media. A man clearly willing to share his ideas, thoughts and attitudes with a different type of audience.

HOWEVER - which uncouth person chose wil anderson, a man who clearly couldn’t construct profound question to save his life, to conduct the interview. Why not ask ralph myers, or at least someone in Australian film. Even andrew denton could have done the man justice. Rather, the comedian cracked ‘one-liners’ between answers, and failed to ask even one thought provoking question.

Adding insult to injury, open questions to the audience made most of the onlookers physically (& audibly) cringe - with queries filled with tedious personal anecdotes, discussion on online forum debates & ‘what’s it like writing a sex scene?’

I was left with feelings of deep embarrassment and regret that such an accomplished writer was allowed to share only fragments of his insight.

‘Ideas at the House’?

“I’ve talked to a lot of people. The place has been around for over fifty years and is designed and maintained by a volunteer group of retirees that meets every three or four weeks. No single designer can claim credit as they meet and discuss ideas together before applying for funding and doing their projects. They did a lot of work in the late 90’s, basically made it what you saw last night.” -
